This voyage includes a visit to the Orkney Isles. Setting sail from Harlingen, this voyage will take you North to the Orkneys and maybe even Shetland Islands before finishing in Ullapool. The weather in May is still very unpredictable, so this voyage really depends on wind and weather. It might mean you will have to wait out a good wind on the Orkney Islands, while sheltering in a bay, the perfect walk would be up the hill to for example the Highland Park Whiskey Distillery.
Setting sail from Harlingen will give you the ideal opportunity to visit some of the best sailing grounds of the Netherlands. The Waddenzee. Here you work with tides, sandbanks and weather. Visiting one or two of the islands off in the Waddenzee depends on the wind. But they are certainly worth spending a day or so on.
Stornoway, you might spend a day here exploring the sites of Gearannan black house village and the Callanisch standing stones. In the evening sail can be set again with destination Hoy. Orkney’s second largest Island rises dramatically from the sea with Ward Hill towering 480mtr above sea level. And if the winds have been favourable and the crossing speedy, you will have time for a stop on the Outer Hebrides.
Set sail across the North Sea and spend some days on some of the most majestical islands of Scotland – the Orkneys and Outer Hebrides. Vikings used to roam here and history can be absorbed on the islands. The Orkneys were first inhabited the fourth millennia before Christ. Archeological finds are scattered all over the islands. Skara Brae offers some of the best views, finds and walks.
Harlingen can be reached by flying to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and then taking a train to the harbour of Harlingen.
Getting from Ullapool home can be done by a bus ride to Inverness where you can fly any where or taking the bus to the train station for connections in the UK.
