Drake Passage

In the heat of the storm

Before we arrive in the Antarctic peninsula we will have to cross the Beagle Channel and the Drake Passage. This passage is known for its stormy weather but also for the spectacular sight of whales, dolphins and seabirds such as giant petrels, albatrosses and penguins. During the crossing, everybody helps out the permanent crew to steer, set, shorten, take away and stow sails. In the heat of the storm help is always needed to furl and brace the sails. This is the true sailing experience! At least… if you dare to come on deck during the very strong winds of the Drake.

During this passage, you will also get IAATO lectures about the rules and regulations on Antarctica, to make sure everyone is well prepared for their first landing on this remote White Continent in the upcoming days.
