Our trip in the Oosterschelde was a great adventure: excellent sailing, thoroughly professional and helpful crew, the good company of fellow guests and fascinating excursions ashore.
Highlight of the voyage:
A night on watch, sailing in Force 5/6 winds under glorious skies with the Captain recounting the origins of the stars according to Greek myths.
As someone in her early ‘70s who hadn’t sailed for many decades, I found the return to the high seas enthralling and exhilarating. From the 110 miles overnight passage on our first night from Sal island to Santiago, San Vicente in Force 5 winds to lounging on deck in tropical warmth, there was always something to learn about this majestic craft and her handling. Although I was somewhat physically restricted from pulling my weight (literally!) due to recent surgery, my husband, who had never previously sailed, responded enthusiastically to the call of “Hands!” from the crew to take part in bracing the topsails, hoisting the main sail and whatever else was required. Experienced sailors in our guest crew found sailing a three-masted topsail schooner required a different technique from that of conventional yachting, so this was a new experience for most of us. It was great to have the opportunity to try your hand at the wheel, join the Captain in the wheelhouse to see some of the technical equipment in action and to chat with the crew.
